Race Details

The race takes you on your own Alpine Corral, venturing out over old stock routes, ascending alpine passes, down spectacular river valleys and revealing untouched grassland valleys.resized_horses

The race starts from Malings Pass Entrance this is easy at first as you venture onto the undulating trails through high country grazing land and the commencement of the short climb (250 vertical metres) over Malings Pass. Whilst the climb won't leave you breathless, the descent will be certain to take the wind from your sails. Caution is noted in taking this descent as a number of water tables inhibit the ability for a smooth ride to the bottom.

As you complete the descent the Waiau River opens up and sprawls its way across the valley floor. The 4WD trail from this point on makes way for great riding on newly developed wide single track through scrub, matagouri, tussock and grassy fields.

The Trail

The trail continues and crosses the first of two newly built swingbridges over the Waiau River and up Saddle Spur. The track steepens markedly at this point and requires commitment to summit the short spur.

Once over Saddle Spur and down the tricky descent the trail once again opens out weaving it's way through Matagouri trees and past Pool Hut.

After a further crossing of the Waiau River, Scotties Camp awaits you and you are well on your way to the Edwards Valley and the return leg home.

Peters Pass is the last challenge of the day. Three or four steep switchbacks will temporarily slow your journey, however once at the top the trail offers you a choice of old farm trails into Peter's Valley and onto the finish at the St James Homestead or an alternative route with a spectacular fast downhill ride to the finish.

The route to the finish will be chosen on the day.

You can view a map of the St James Cycle Trail on the DOC website. You can also read a description of the trail, directions and estimated times and distances.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO RACE START

From Hanmer Springs, take the gravel road leading over Jacks Pass. Once over Jacks Pass saddle and the descent down the other side, the valley opens out and it is at this point you take the first left onto Top House Road at the sign posted intersection. Do not travel on past this point towards the Moleswoorth Station.

You then follow the Clarence River, keeping the river on your right, all the way up the river valley for approximately 25km. You will soon pass the former St James Station Homestead, where the race will finish, and the turn off to the Hanmer Springs Ski Area, before reaching the start line at Malings Pass Entrance approximately 25km further on.

Expect the trip to take you 40min from Hanmer.
